The Brain Injury Support Group has been a long-time ally of the firm, helping many of our clients who have sustained traumatic brain and head injuries. This text is taken directly from their website:
"The mission of the BISG of Portland is to serve those affected by brain injury through advocacy, community awareness, education, injury prevention, service, and support. Most brain injuries fit in the category of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). This category includes injuries from a stroke, brain aneurysm, brain tumor, etc. The dominant sub-category of ABI is the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), typically caused by automobile accidents, falls, blows to the head, penetrating head wounds, brain surgery, etc. A traumatic head injury may be either a closed head injury, with no penetrating wound, or an open head injury."
Swanson, Thomas & Coon is proud to be associated with the good work done by BISG, which was formerly known as the Family Head Injury Support Group.
In addition to BISG, there is also a place on the world wide web for information about reporting traumatic brain injuries to the
Centers for Disease Control.
The following sites have been recommended by BISG. We also include our capsule review:
"Health and Fitness in Mind for Life" is how brain.com bills itself. The site is chock full of interesting articles regarding research and treatment for brain injuries. In addition, the people who run the site don't mind dabbling in the esoteric and science fiction, along with demonstrations and games to test and increase your brain power.
The Dana Brain Web was created as a resource to guide persons to the best the Internet has to offer in terms of help for 23 specific brain disorders, as well as a clearinghouse for a host of other information.
The TBI Resource Guide is maintained by the Centre for Neuro Skills, and "is the internet's central source of information, services and products relating to traumatic brain injury, brain injury recovery, and post-acute rehabilitation." The site has many articles of interest, as well as practical essays on living life with a traumatic brain injury.
Antoinette Appel, Ph.D. of Plantation, Florida maintains a primer for neuropsychology and treatment of brain injuries at her
website. Basic nuts-and-bolts information about what a brain injury is, how a neuropsychologist can help diagnose the injury and decide on a course of treatment. Further information about brain injuries, strokes and other neuropsychological impairments can be found at the
website of Dr. Richard L Windsor.
The resources listed in this site provide information about claims under the Federal Employees' Compensation Act (FECA), which is administered by the Office of Workers' Compensation Programs (OWCP).
The
National Workplace Injury Litigation Group is a non-profit association of attorneys "dedicated to advancing just and fair remedies for workers who are victims of occupational injury or disease. The group acts principally to assist attorneys in advocating the rights of injured workers through education, communication, research, and information gathering."
